In plain terms
What actually gets rewritten
“Custom tune” is a phrase that can mean anything, which is why we would rather itemize it. This is the scope of the work on a RAM Dakota — and several of these lines are sold as separate add-ons elsewhere.
If a behavior you care about is not on this list, ask before you order. If it cannot be changed on your controller, we say so — that is cheaper for both of us than finding out after.
On every calibration
- Fuelling and spark
- The fuel and ignition tables rewritten for the fuel you declared, verified against knock on every revision.
- Torque management
- The factory torque limits that blunt response, reshaped deliberately rather than crudely zeroed out.
- Throttle mapping
- Pedal position to throttle angle, remapped so the car does what your foot actually asked.
- Rev and speed limiters
- Moved deliberately, within what the rotating hardware and the tires are rated for.
- Cooling fan strategy
- Fans brought in earlier and harder. Heat is the tax on every additional horsepower, so it is managed, not ignored.
On this engine
Derived from what is actually fitted to this vehicle — this list changes from platform to platform.
- Speedometer and gearing correction
- Changed tire size or ring-and-pinion? The speedometer and the tables that depend on it get corrected to match.
Before you compare quotes
Why a cheaper number is usually a smaller job
Calibration is one of four things this vehicle needs before it runs. Most quotes cover the one.
What arrives
One box. Nothing else to buy.
The parcel contains everything the price covered — the DEFI RTD4 that carries your calibration, the license already allocated to your ECM, and the tune built for your declared modifications. It flashes in your driveway.
- DEFI RTD4 interface — yours to keep — the tune arrives encrypted, and revisions load onto the same device
- Your license — allocated to your ECM before the box ships
- Your calibration — pump gas and E85 maps, written for your exact ECM strategy and mod list
- Revisions after delivery — send a datalog, get an update on the device you already have

After you pay
What happens next
No returns is not no recourse. The process in the middle is why the parcel works when it lands.
- 01
You order
Vehicle, transmission, fuel and modification list — the same details the configurator just walked you through.
- 02
We verify
VIN and ECM strategy are confirmed before anything is allocated. If something about the combination is wrong, you hear from us first, not the courier.
- 03
The calibration is built
Written for your exact controller and declared modifications, license bound to your ECM. This is engineering time, not a file download.
- 04
It arrives ready — and we stay
Flash it in the driveway. Then send a datalog: most vehicles want at least one revision, revisions load onto the device you already own, and that is normal, not a defect.
The details live at revisions & aftercare and credits & licensing.
Every Dakota we support
Each has its own page with the full specification, the catalog notes and the requirements in detail.

Before you decide
Asked on every one of these
The answers that cost us sales, kept on the page anyway.
All the questionsLonger answers: which parts genuinely need calibration and is my ECU locked.
Something specific to your car? (951) 405-4465 — a two-minute call beats a form.
- Will my car stay smog-legal?
- No. Calibration alters emissions-related engine management. Our work is sold for off-road and competition use. We would rather you hear that here than at a testing station.
- What if I need a revision after delivery?
- Send a datalog and tell us what fuel was in the tank. We revise and publish the update to the same device you already have. Most vehicles need at least one revision and that is normal.
- Why are there no returns?
- Licenses are consumed on application and bind permanently to one ECM. They cannot be recovered, transferred or resold by us or by the platform vendor — so after application there is genuinely nothing to return. We disclose this on the product page and require an explicit acknowledgement at checkout, before payment.
- Do I need supporting modifications?
- Often, yes — and the "you do not need a tune for that part" advice you have read online is usually wrong in the other direction too. Fuel system capacity, cooling, clutch capacity and knock margin all constrain what a calibration can safely ask for. We will tell you where your combination runs out before we take the job.
