Emissions and off-road use
A tuned vehicle is not smog-legal in California. We say this everywhere, not just here.
What you are agreeing to
Calibration work alters emissions-related engine management. A vehicle we calibrate is sold for off-road and competition use, is not certified for use on public roads in California, and will not pass a smog inspection in the tuned state.
Added power also costs longevity and fuel economy. Components specified for the factory output will see more than they were designed for. We will tell you which trade you are making before you buy — but the decision, and the responsibility for how the vehicle is used, is yours.
This is federal, not just a California inconvenience
The Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with or disabling an emissions control device on a vehicle used on public roads, and prohibits manufacturing or selling a device that defeats one. Those provisions are federal and apply wherever you live.
Nothing we sell carries a CARB Executive Order number, and we do not claim one. A part or a calibration without an EO number is not legal for use on a pollution-controlled vehicle on a public road in California.
What that means in practice
Plainly, so nobody is surprised at a smog station:
- A tuned vehicle will not pass a California smog inspection in the tuned state.
- Returning a vehicle to stock before an inspection is your decision and your responsibility.
- Removing or defeating a catalytic converter, an EGR system, or a diesel particulate filter is outside what we will do.
- Registering a tuned vehicle for road use, and any consequence of that, is yours.
Why we put this in front of you rather than at the bottom of a page
Plenty of shops bury this. We would rather lose a sale to someone who needed a smog-legal answer than take their money and let them discover it at the inspection station.
