Your interface

Why buy your tuning interface from your tuner

· DEFI Motorsports, Corona CA

A tuning interface is a small box that plugs into the diagnostic port. On its own it does very little. What makes it worth having is who is on the other end of it — and whether, six months from now, you can still reach them without putting the car on a trailer.

Two ways to get a tune onto a car

The first is to flash it in the shop, on the shop’s own interface. The car leaves running the calibration, and that is the end of the connection. Every change after that — a new part, a different fuel, a revision because something does not feel right — means bringing the car back.

The second is to write it through an interface that stays with you. With a DEFI calibration that is a DEFI RTD4 in the box, yours to keep. It is how the first file reaches the car, and how every file after it does too.

What a shop flash leaves you without

One of our customers runs a factory-ECU drift car. Flashed in the shop, he is tied to us: if he moves out of state, if a friend gives him a supercharger, if something runs badly at a track three hundred miles away, the honest answer is “bring it back.” Nothing can be sent to a car that has no interface on it.

There is a cost trap in that path too. HP Tuners licenses a vehicle on one interface at a time. A car first licensed on the shop’s device needs licensing again if you later want your own interface on it. Buying the interface with the tune avoids paying for that twice.

Flashed in the shop, every change is a trip back. With an interface you keep, the car is never out of reach.

What the interface with DEFI behind it actually does

It is the same hardware anybody can buy. These are the things it does because a calibrator is on the other end of it.

  • Revisions without a visit. A revised file arrives in the TDN app on your phone and you write it to the car in your driveway or in the pits.
  • Datalogs from your phone. Start a log in the app, drive, upload it. No laptop. We read what the engine actually did — your fuel, your climate, your right foot.
  • More than one fuel. Pump gas and E85 are in every DEFI tune, and the files sit on the device so you flash the one that matches the tank.
  • Parts added later. Add a supercharger or a cam a year from now and the calibration follows it to the same device. HP Tuners does not charge licensing again for re-flashing the same vehicle on the same interface.
  • Codes read from the app. If the check-engine light comes on, the app reads the trouble codes and you can send them to us with a log.
  • Help from wherever the car is. A sensor dropping out at a track day is a log and a phone call, not a tow home.

Why the RTD4 is our choice

HP Tuners builds the RTD4 for tuners delivering calibrations to customers. It cannot open a tune file in HP Tuners’ editing software at all, so the calibration on your car stays the calibration we wrote. It logs, reads codes and flashes from a phone.

If you already own an HP Tuners interface linked to TDN — an MPVI2, MPVI3, MPVI4 or RTD4 — we will tune through it, and you buy the calibration alone. An MPVI can open tune files, so on one we lock the file with HP Tuners’ tune security: it needs our tuner ID to open, view or edit. That works. The RTD4 is simply the one built for this job.

What it costs

Every DEFI tune price already includes the RTD4 and the HP Tuners licensing the vehicle needs. There is no second invoice for the device, and shipping it to you is included. Pick your vehicle and the number on the page is the number you pay.

Questions people ask

Can I add an interface after my car was flashed in the shop?
Yes, but HP Tuners licenses each vehicle per interface, so the car needs licensing again on the new device. Call us and we will tell you what that is for your vehicle before you commit.
Can I use an interface I already own?
Yes, if it is an HP Tuners MPVI2, MPVI3, MPVI4 or RTD4 linked to TDN. You buy the calibration alone and supply the licensing yourself. The RTD4 is our choice; on an MPVI we lock the file with HP Tuners’ tune security.
Do I need a laptop?
Not with an RTD4. Logging, uploading logs, reading codes and flashing files are all done in HP Tuners’ TDN app on your phone.
