BMW 2 Series and M2 tuning
The M240i, M235i, every M2 from the F87 to the G87, and the 135i and 1M before them — written on our hub dyno or remotely on MHD.
Priced per car on a call · in our Corona shop or remote anywhere in the US
The small BMWs carry the big BMW engines. The 135i and 1M run the N54; the M235i and the first F87 M2 run the N55; the M240i moved to the B58; the M2 Competition and CS took the S55 from the M3 and M4, and the G87 M2 carries the current S58.
That makes the 2 Series one of the best-supported BMWs on MHD, and one of the most tuned. The difference between cars is mostly the unlock: an N54 flashes over the port, while every G87 M2 needs its DME removed and unlocked before anything is written.
On our dyno in Corona
Bolted to a Mainline ProHub hub dyno — no tires, no straps — and calibrated against measured power, with the conditions on the sheet. Our hub dyno runs rear-wheel-drive cars. xDrive (all-wheel-drive) BMWs are tuned remotely on MHD, from your logs.
Remote, anywhere in the US
- In MHD, screenshot the DME’s bin number, software version and readiness page, and save the stock .bin file MHD reads from the car.
- Send them to us with what is fitted and the fuel you run. We write the calibration for that car.
- Flash it with MHD. You log, we read the logs and revise until it is right.
What we tune
Models, engines and unlocks
Every car here runs an engine MHD supports. What changes from car to car is what has to happen before the first flash.
| Model | Chassis | Years (US) | Engine | Before the first flash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 135i | E82 / E88 | 2008–2010 | N54 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| 1M | E82 | 2011 | N54 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| 135i | E82 / E88 | 2011–2013 | N55 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| M235i | F22 / F23 | 2014–2016 | N55 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| M240i | F22 / F23 | 2017–2021 | B58 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| M2 | F87 | 2016–2018 | N55 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| M2 Competition / CS | F87 | 2019–2021 | S55 | Needs a DME bench unlock first |
| M240i | G42 | 2022– | B58 | Needs a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock (DME removed) |
| M2 | G87 | 2023– | S58 | Needs a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock (DME removed) |
Unlock requirements are MHD’s, and they follow when the DME was built, not the model year. MHD’s app has a free Unlock Check that tells you exactly what your car needs.
Before you buy
Questions people ask
- Can you tune a G87 M2?
- Yes — it is an S58, which MHD supports. Every G87 was built after 06/2020, so the DME has to come out for a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock before the first flash. Plan for that time and cost; we will walk you through it on the call.
- Can you tune an N54 135i or 1M?
- Yes. MHD flashes the N54 over the OBD port with no unlock, and it is still one of the most rewarding engines to calibrate — provided the fuel system and the injectors are healthy before we add anything.
- How much does a 2 Series tune cost?
- It is quoted on a call while we finish publishing BMW prices. The figure depends on the engine, what is fitted, the fuel, how many maps you want, and whether the DME needs an unlock first. Call or send the quote form and you get one number before anything is booked.
- Do I need an MHD licence for a custom 2 Series tune?
- Yes. MHD licences are bought per car and held on your MHD account, and a custom tune needs at least the MHD Flasher licence — the map packs are optional. You also need MHD’s wireless adapter. If you do not have either yet, tell us on the call.
- Will a tuned 2 Series pass a California smog check?
- No. Since July 2020 California Smog Check reads the engine software’s calibration ID, and software that is neither BMW’s nor covered by a CARB Executive Order fails. A custom tune is for off-road and competition use, and we will say so before you buy, not after.

A tuned BMW will not pass a California smog check, and adding power costs longevity and economy. We say so before you buy. Emissions disclaimer
