BMW 3 Series and M3 tuning
The N54 and N55 335i, the B58 340i and M340i, the S55 F80 M3 and the S58 G80 M3 — custom MHD tunes, on our hub dyno or remotely.
Priced per car on a call · in our Corona shop or remote anywhere in the US
The 3 Series is where BMW tuning started for most people. The E9x 335i’s N54 made the platform famous, the N55 replaced it, the F30 340i brought the B58, and the G20 M340i is now the default fast BMW.
The M3 follows its own line: the F80’s S55 and the G80’s S58, both on MHD and both among the most tuned M engines there are.
On our dyno in Corona
Bolted to a Mainline ProHub hub dyno — no tires, no straps — and calibrated against measured power, with the conditions on the sheet. Our hub dyno runs rear-wheel-drive cars. xDrive (all-wheel-drive) BMWs are tuned remotely on MHD, from your logs.
Remote, anywhere in the US
- In MHD, screenshot the DME’s bin number, software version and readiness page, and save the stock .bin file MHD reads from the car.
- Send them to us with what is fitted and the fuel you run. We write the calibration for that car.
- Flash it with MHD. You log, we read the logs and revise until it is right.
What we tune
Models, engines and unlocks
Every car here runs an engine MHD supports. What changes from car to car is what has to happen before the first flash.
| Model | Chassis | Years (US) | Engine | Before the first flash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 335i | E90 / E92 / E93 | 2007–2010 | N54 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| 335is | E92 / E93 | 2011–2013 | N54 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| 335i | E9x | 2011–2013 | N55 | Flashes over the OBD port |
| 335i | F30 / F34 | 2012–2015 | N55 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| 340i | F30 / F34 | 2016–2019 | B58 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| M3 | F80 | 2015–2018 | S55 | May need a bench unlock, depending on software |
| M340i | G20 | 2020– | B58 | Needs a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock (DME removed)Cars built before 06/2020 may need only a bench unlock |
| M3 | G80 | 2021– | S58 | Needs a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock (DME removed) |
Unlock requirements are MHD’s, and they follow when the DME was built, not the model year. MHD’s app has a free Unlock Check that tells you exactly what your car needs.
Before you buy
Questions people ask
- Can you tune an M340i?
- Yes. It is a B58, and MHD supports it. A car built after 06/2020 needs its DME removed and unlocked by FEMTO or AutoTuner first; earlier cars may need only a bench unlock. MHD’s free Unlock Check tells you which before you spend anything.
- Can you tune a G80 M3?
- Yes — the S58 is on MHD. Like every current M car it needs the FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock first. xDrive M3s are tuned remotely from logs; rear-drive cars can be done on our hub dyno.
- N54 or N55 335i — can you tune both?
- Yes. Both are MHD platforms. The N54 flashes over the port; an F30 N55 on BMW’s newest software needs a bench unlock first.
- How much does a 3 Series tune cost?
- It is quoted on a call while we finish publishing BMW prices. The figure depends on the engine, what is fitted, the fuel, how many maps you want, and whether the DME needs an unlock first. Call or send the quote form and you get one number before anything is booked.
- Do I need an MHD licence for a custom 3 Series tune?
- Yes. MHD licences are bought per car and held on your MHD account, and a custom tune needs at least the MHD Flasher licence — the map packs are optional. You also need MHD’s wireless adapter. If you do not have either yet, tell us on the call.
- Will a tuned 3 Series pass a California smog check?
- No. Since July 2020 California Smog Check reads the engine software’s calibration ID, and software that is neither BMW’s nor covered by a CARB Executive Order fails. A custom tune is for off-road and competition use, and we will say so before you buy, not after.

A tuned BMW will not pass a California smog check, and adding power costs longevity and economy. We say so before you buy. Emissions disclaimer
