BMW tuning
Custom calibrations for the BMW engines people actually build — N54, N55, B58, S55, S58 and S63 — flashed with MHD. Written on our hub dyno in Corona, or remotely from your logs anywhere in the US.
Priced per car on a call · in our Corona shop or remote anywhere in the US
Every BMW tune here is a custom file written for your car, its parts and its fuel, not an off-the-shelf stage map. You keep flashing it the way BMW owners already do: with MHD Flasher on your phone and MHD’s wireless adapter in the OBD port.
In the shop, the car is bolted to a Mainline ProHub hub dyno — no tires, no straps — and the calibration is written against measured power with the weather conditions on the sheet. Remotely, you send the logs and the stock file from MHD, we write the revision, and it comes back to your phone to flash.
On our dyno in Corona
Bolted to a Mainline ProHub hub dyno — no tires, no straps — and calibrated against measured power, with the conditions on the sheet. Our hub dyno runs rear-wheel-drive cars. xDrive (all-wheel-drive) BMWs are tuned remotely on MHD, from your logs.
Remote, anywhere in the US
- In MHD, screenshot the DME’s bin number, software version and readiness page, and save the stock .bin file MHD reads from the car.
- Send them to us with what is fitted and the fuel you run. We write the calibration for that car.
- Flash it with MHD. You log, we read the logs and revise until it is right.
What we tune
The engines we tune on MHD
Every car here runs an engine MHD supports. What changes from car to car is what has to happen before the first flash.
| Engine | Where you find it | Before the first flash |
|---|---|---|
| N54 | Twin-turbo inline-six — 135i, 335i, 535i, 1M, X6 35i | Flashes over OBD; MHD lists no unlock |
| N55 | Single twin-scroll turbo inline-six — 335i, 435i, 535i, M235i, F87 M2, X3/X4/X5/X6 35i | F-series cars on the newest BMW software need a DME bench unlock |
| B58 | The modern turbo inline-six — 340i, M340i, 440i, M440i, 540i, M240i, X3/X4 M40i, X5/X6/X7 40i | Gen1 may need a bench unlock; Gen2 always does; any car built after 06/2020 needs a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock |
| S55 | Twin-turbo M inline-six — F80 M3, F82/F83 M4, M2 Competition and CS | M2 Competition always bench unlocked; cars built after 06/2020 need a special unlock |
| S58 | Current M inline-six — G80 M3, G82/G83 M4, G87 M2, X3 M, X4 M | Cars built after 06/2020 need a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock |
| S63 | Twin-turbo M V8 — F10 and F90 M5, F85/F86 and F95/F96 X5 M and X6 M | Cars built after 06/2020 need a FEMTO or AutoTuner unlock |

Questions people ask
- Which BMWs can you tune?
- Anything with an engine MHD supports: the N54, N55, B58, S55, S58 and S63. That covers the 135i and 335i through the current M340i, M440i, M2, M3, M4, M5, X3 M, X4 M, X5 M and X6 M.
- Is a custom tune better than an MHD off-the-shelf map?
- An off-the-shelf map is written for a typical car. A custom tune is written for yours: its fuel, its parts, its logs, and on the dyno its measured power. If you are running anything beyond intake and downpipe, or ethanol, it is the difference between a map that works and a map that fits.
- Why does my newer BMW need its DME unlocked?
- BMW locked the engine computer on later cars. MHD says cars produced after 06/2020 need a special unlock, done with the DME removed — by FEMTO in Finland or with AutoTuner — and some earlier B58 and N55 cars need a bench unlock too. MHD’s app has a free Unlock Check that tells you which applies before you spend anything. Going back to stock removes the unlock.
- Can you dyno tune my xDrive BMW?
- Our hub dyno runs rear-wheel-drive cars. xDrive (all-wheel-drive) BMWs are tuned remotely on MHD, from your logs.
- How much does a BMW tune cost?
- It is quoted on a call while we finish publishing BMW prices. The figure depends on the engine, what is fitted, the fuel, how many maps you want, and whether the DME needs an unlock first. Call or send the quote form and you get one number before anything is booked.
- Do I need an MHD licence for a custom BMW tune?
- Yes. MHD licences are bought per car and held on your MHD account, and a custom tune needs at least the MHD Flasher licence — the map packs are optional. You also need MHD’s wireless adapter. If you do not have either yet, tell us on the call.
- Will a tuned BMW pass a California smog check?
- No. Since July 2020 California Smog Check reads the engine software’s calibration ID, and software that is neither BMW’s nor covered by a CARB Executive Order fails. A custom tune is for off-road and competition use, and we will say so before you buy, not after.

A tuned BMW will not pass a California smog check, and adding power costs longevity and economy. We say so before you buy. Emissions disclaimer
