Emissions

GM lists this engine as legal for sale and use only on uncontrolled (non-emissions-controlled) vehicles, or on vehicles used solely for closed-course competition. It is not a legal replacement engine for an emissions-controlled street car.

What the LS3 is

The LS3 is GM’s 6.2-litre Gen IV small-block: an aluminum block with six-bolt, cross-bolted mains, rectangular-port L92-style heads and a hydraulic roller cam. It first went into the 2008 C6 Corvette, and it is still one of the most-swapped V8s there is, because it makes real power on pump gas, it is light, and the parts and knowledge behind it are everywhere.

This is the 430 hp long block, part 19435106 — the current number for the engine GM has also sold as 19434644 and 19432422. If you are matching a part number from a build sheet or a forum thread, those are the same engine.

What a long block is, and what you still need

A long block is the core of the engine: block, rotating assembly, cam and heads, assembled and ready to dress. It is not a turn-key engine. You choose the intake, fuel system, engine management and accessories to suit the car it is going into — which is the point of buying a long block rather than a complete crate engine.

The list below is what it takes to make it run. If you are not sure what your swap needs, ask before you buy rather than after. That is a five-minute phone call.

Warranty, stated the way GM states it

Chevrolet Performance crate engines carry GM’s limited warranty: 24 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, when the engine is installed by a qualified service centre. GM excludes engines used for racing or competition, and failures caused by alteration or improper use.

Warranty claims run through GM under GM’s terms, not ours. Read them before you buy, keep your receipt, and keep a record of who installed the engine.

Installed, wired and tuned here — if you want it

You can collect the engine and do the swap yourself. If you would rather not, we install, wire and calibrate it here: the engine, a standalone controller like Holley’s Terminator X, and the calibration done on our hub dyno with the full sheet at the end.

Shop labor is published at $265 an hour. How many hours a swap takes depends entirely on the car it is going into, so we quote it against your car rather than guessing a number on a web page.

What it costs you besides the money

An LS3 swap is a big change to a car. It moves weight, it asks more of the cooling system, the driveline and the brakes, and in most cases it takes the car out of emissions compliance. We would rather say that here than have you find it out at a smog station.

Questions

Before you buy

Can you ship it?

No. The engine is collected at the shop in Corona. Once you have paid, we call you to arrange a time. Tell us how you are taking it home and we will have it ready.

Is it new?

Yes. It is a new Chevrolet Performance long block in GM’s crate, sitting at our shop now.

Is 19435106 the same engine as 19434644 or 19432422?

Yes. GM supersedes the part number when it revises its catalogue. 19435106 is the current number and replaces 19434644, 19432422 and 19420382.

What do I need to make it run?

An intake and throttle body, injectors and fuel rails, engine management, exhaust manifolds or headers, the accessory drive, a flexplate or flywheel, a starter and mounts. A long block is the core of the engine and nothing else.

Will you install and tune it?

Yes. We install, wire and calibrate it here at the published $265-an-hour shop labor rate, then tune it on the hub dyno. The hours depend on the car, so we quote the job against yours.

Can I return it?

No. Third-party hardware is sold with no returns and no exchanges — the manufacturer’s warranty is the warranty. That is stated before you pay and you agree to it at checkout.
